Upholstery Maintenance
Keeping your upholstery looking its best doesn't require much effort. Simply follow the tips below to get the most service and
enjoyment from your upholstered furniture.
- Avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight. Ultraviolet rays from sunlight will cause damage to your fabric or leather over
time.
- Rotate and reverse loose cushions and pillows every week. All foam, no matter how good the grade will compress and
lose some of its spring with continued use. Rotating the cushions will ensure more even wear and the fabric or leather will wear
more evenly as well.
- Vacuum furniture every two weeks. More often if you have children or pets. Dust, soil, hair, dead skin cells will all settle
onto furniture. Use the upholstery attachment from your vacuum to remove these things before they become ground in to the fabric
or grain of the leather.
- Blot spilled liquids immediately. Never rub the area and make sure all liquid is absorbed. Always use white towels or
paper towels to avoid dye transfer. To prevent spreading, work from the outside of the spill to the inside. Follow the cleaning
procedure provided by the furniture manufacturer. If you must use a spotting product, make sure you test it in an inconspicuous
area to test for dye bleed.
- Have your upholstery cleaned every few years. You may need cleaning more frequently, especially if you have children or
pets. To maintain the best appearance and have your upholstered furniture last, it requires the assistance of a professional
furniture cleaner. Please don't attempt to dry-clean, shampoo, or wash removable covers and risk damaging your furniture.
- Last, but not least, when you think replacing your furniture is your only option... When fabric is worn, torn, or
frayed or the seat cushion just doesn't have the support it used to, consider replacing only the things that need to be replaced. If the
frame is in good shape, there's no reason that the furniture needs to go to a landfill. Typically, seats and arm covers will wear faster
than the back. Consider having only those pieces re-upholstered or the entire piece if you're looking for a change. Also, when fabric
is in good shape, but you need more support in the cushion, consider replacing the foam and batting.
